When Did Bare Breasts Become Taboo?
Topless Kate Middleton photos would have been socially acceptable in some eras.
For publishing topless photos of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, a French judge on Tuesday order the magazine to turn over the "offending" pictures.
Attorneys for the magazine argued unsuccessfully that the photographs were not an invasion of privacy because bare breasts are no longer taboo in Europe. Now, the question is :When did bare breasts become taboo in Western civilization?
Probably around 3,000 years ago. Women are displayed with exposed breasts in Minoanartwork from 1500 B.C. Some historians believe that these ancient women went topless only during religious rituals—bare-breasted, buxom goddesses have been worshipped since the dawn of civilization—but some of the artworks depict everyday activities, suggesting that bare breasts may have been commonplace. Just across the Mediterranean, ancient Egyptian women sported elaborate dresses that could either cover the breasts or leave them exposed, depending on the whim of the designer. Over the next few centuries, however, breasts become strictly private parts. Ancient Athenian women were wearing flowing, multilayered robes that concealed the shape of the bosom by the middle of the first millennium B.C. Spartan attire was more risqué, exposing the female thigh, but breasts were always covered.
A series of sculptures suggests that even Greek goddesses became more bashful about their breasts during this period. Aphrodite of Cnidus, sculpted by Praxiteles of Athens in the fourth century B.C., depicts the nude goddess covering her genitals but leaving her bosom exposed. In copycat statues sculpted over the next several centuries, however, the goddess uses her other hand to cover a breast as well. The evolution of these Venus pudica sculptures strongly suggests that the ancients had come to feel that modesty required covering the breasts.

It’s not entirely clear why bare breasts became verboten in ancient Greece, but some historians think it had to do with the changing roles of women. As the centuries progressed, ancient Athens became an increasingly patriarchal society. Women retreated into the home, rarely emerging in public, and lived under the dominion of their fathers or husbands. Because the breast had long been a symbol of feminine fertility, it had to be kept from view.
Under the influence of the Bible and ancient Greek and Roman traditions, Western women kept their breasts concealed beneath loose-fitting garb for more than a millennium. The French aristocracy was the first to challenge the taboo. During the 1300s, necklines began to plunge and clothing became tighter, exposing the shape of the breast. Agnès Soler, the mistress to French King Charles VII, shocked the court by appearing in a painting with one breast fully exposed in the late 1400s. The most provocative ladies of Venice and England are said to have walked the streets bare-breasted in the following century. There are even hints that Queen Elizabeth I herself exposed all or nearly all of her breasts to guests, which, if true, might provide some comfort to the young Duchess of Cambridge. But the trend was temporary, and the general prohibition on bare breasts in European society was firmly entrenched again by the 1600s.

Jonathan Agrees To Tear New N5000 Note Into Pieces
Dr Goodluck Jonathan. President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed to reverse his administration’s plan to introduce the 5000 naira note.
The currency restructuring, announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, would have seen the unveiling of the N5000 note as the highest naira denomination while lower currencies were to be converted to coins.
Weeks of public outrage criticizing the policy culminated in the Senate and the House of Representatives, approving separate resolutions on Tuesday, demanding that the plan be suspended.
Mr. Jonathan met with the leadership of the two arms hours after the National Assembly sessions on Tuesday and assured that any “approval given in the regards can be reversed since it is the wish of the people,” lawmakers informed about the decision said Wednesday afternoon.
It however remains unclear whether the president has issued a directive to that effect.
Jonathan says subsidy protest was stage managed. Do you agree with him?
In the gospel according to GEJ, this entire crowd at the January anti-subsidy rally in Lagos were sponsored. |
President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the January nationwide protest over the total removal of subsidy from petroleum was stage managed by a class of Nigerians who wanted the status quo of corruption in that sector to remain.
He said it was not carried out by ordinary Nigerians who wanted to communicate their grievances to their government.
Mr Jonathan, who disclosed this at the 52nd Independence anniversary lecture with the title, Nigeria: Security, Development and National Transformation, said it was the responsibility of Government to provide the enabling environment for development but it was left for the citizens to ensure enforcement.
“Look at the demonstrations back home, look at the areas this demonstrations are coming from, you begin to ask, are these the ordinary citizens that are demonstrating? Or are people pushing them to demonstrate.
“Take the case of Lagos, Lagos is the critical state in the nation’s economy, it controls about 53 per cent of the economy and all tribes are there. The demonstration in Lagos, people were given bottled water that people in my village don’t have access to, people were given expensive food that the ordinary people in Lagos cannot eat. So, even going to eat free alone attracts people. They go and hire the best musician to come and play and the best comedian to come and entertain; is that demonstration? Are you telling me that that is a demonstration from ordinary masses in Nigeria who want to communicate something to government?
“For me, if I see somebody is manipulating anything, I don’t listen to you, but when I see people genuinely talking about issues, I listen. I am hardly intimidated by anybody who wants to push any issue he has. I believe that that protest in Lagos was manipulated by a class in Lagos and was not from the ordinary people.” Jonathan submitted.

Bizarre!!! Man Rapes 8 kids In Lagos
The rapped kids |
A man who delighted in defiling about eight children in Ipaja-Ayobo area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria has been arrested by the police. He is now being detained, awaiting arraignment in court.
The
suspect, Mr. Temitope Alo was arrested on Saturday at Koloba area of Ayobo
after the children allegedly confessed that he had raped them.
The
eight victims, whose ages range from eight to 15 years were brought to the Lagos
State Ministry of Women Affairs and
Poverty Alleviation, WAPA yesterday by the Vice
Chairman, Ipaja-Ayobo Local
Council Development Area, LCDA, Alhaja
Falilat Ajijola to enable the state government to take over the case.
The
victim said he works for a newspaper company (name withheld) in Lagos and
allegedly lured the children to his apartment where he defiled them and
threatened to kill them if they reported the matter.
Tests
conducted on the eight children at the Ayobo-Ipaja Primary Health Centre, PHC,
showed that the children had been defiled.
A
top official of the WAPA Ministry said that the ministry had been handling rape
cases but they had never recorded a case
where a man serially raped eight children.
The
news of the rape caused a stir at the WAPA ministry as the staff rained curses
on the alleged rapist.
According
to the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA Vice Chairman, Ajijola, last week a case of rape was
reported to the Neighbourhood Watch
office at the council but when enquiries were made, the traditional ruler of
Koloba was said to have denied that such
a thing happened in his area.
She
said a few days later, the former council chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja, Bisi Yusuf
reported that the incident actually
happened and that further investigation traced the rape case to the culprit,
who was promptly arrested.
Ajijola
added that the traditional ruler, Chief Babayanju, later opened up and admitted
that the story was true, while eight
children came forward to report that they were allegedly raped by Alo.
The
vice chairman said the children were taken to the PHC in the area where tests
were conducted on them and it was
confirmed that the children had been defiled.
Two
children of a community leader in the area were among the victims.
Chairman,
Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, Alhaji Shakiru Adisa Yusuf said he was shocked when he heard
the story, adding that such a person is
worse than an animal.
“I
was shocked because I am also a parent. Why must he go after innocent children?
Such people should not live in this community,”
he said, adding that the council would pursue the case to ensure that justice
was done.
“We
will collect the tests conducted on the children and hand them over to the
state government. We will pursue the
case to a logical conclusion. This man has brought disgrace to this community,”
he said.
Acting
Director, Child Development, WAPA Ministry, Mrs Mosunmola Dada said the issue
was disgusting, adding that such a man
must be a paedophile and vowed that the government would ensure that he was
prosecuted.
“We
have evidences against him. The Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA has a medical report on this
case. We will monitor and follow up this
case,” she said.
The
suspect, in his statement at the Ayobo Police Station, was said to have
admitted that he raped some children,
but that he only raped four and not eight.
P.M.NEWS
could not get to him as he was in custody of the police, while the Divisional
Police Officer, DPO of the station was
not around for comments.
One
of the victims, an eight years old girl (name withheld) told P.M.NEWS that the
suspect told them to help him arrange
newspapers in his apartment, adding that, “after that, he told us to go into
the next room.
“He
asked us to remove our panties and I asked him what he wanted to do to us. He
laid me on the bed and defiled me four
times. He covered our mouths with white handkerchief and threatened to kill us
if we report,” she said.
Another
victim, a 12 years old girl (name withheld) alleged that the suspect “licked my
private part. He called me and my friend
in. He asked me to bring N100 fufu for him, which I brought. While I was
waiting for the money with my friend, he
asked my friend whether she could keep a secret.
“He
asked me to pull off my panties but I did not answer and he forced me and
licked my private part while he slept
with my friend and defiled her too. He gave us N50. I told my friend that I
will tell my mummy, but he threatened to
kill us if we told anybody.”

Revealed, Boyfriend killed Ogun Varsity student, not armed robbers
Contrary to reports making the rounds last week that Wunmi
Adebayo, a Tai Solarin University of Education undergraduate was reportedly
killed few days ago by armed robbers at her boyfriend’s apartment in Ijebu Ode,
a latest development has revealed the real killers.
It has now been revealed that she was actually killed by her
boyfriend as the young man has allegedly confessed to the Police.
When the news broke ,
the boyfriend had alleged that armed robbers invaded his home late in the night,
raped and killed Wunmi, however, according to a report, the boyfriend had
actually cooked up the story in order to cover up his evil deed.
According to the gist making the rounds, when the lady's
parents were informed about the death of their daughter, they felt something
was fishy and had to go the traditional way by invoking the spirit of the
deceased to torment whoever is responsible for her death, so much so that the
person would be forced to confess.
This is believed to have made him voluntarily confessed to
the police.
In his confession to the police, the boyfriend gave a
graphical narration of the event that led to the killing of his girlfriend.
According to him, Wunmi came to his house that fateful night
unannounced and when she banged into his room, she met him with his friends
celebrating with guns on the table.
Socked and greatly afraid of what she has just witnessed,
Wunmi ran back and the men ran after her. They caught up with her, overpowered
her and gave her the beatings of her life. They subsequently forced her back to
the room, where they raped and finally shot her.
The loverboy then shot himself as well in order to serve as an
alibi for himself and concort the armed robbery story as was being circulated.
He said he had to do that so that Wunmi won’t tell anyone
what she saw.
Some of his friends have also been arrested while some are
said to be at large.
Meanwhile, the police are said to be putting their cases
together with the aim of charging them to court.
My Boyfriend Impregnated Me And My Two Daughters" - 53-year-old Mum
I am in my early 50s. I am divorced, have been for more than a decade. I live on my own with my three children.
About a year ago, I went into a relationship with a man four
years younger than I am. Being married, we meet in my place. As a matter of
fact he has the key to my flat. It was better than going to hotels.
Besides, my daughters were grown up to appreciate that I
need a man in my life. Well, I thought I could trust him so I gave him
permission to come to my house whenever he likes I am in or not. I also assumed
my daughters were responsible enough to see him as their father. Unfortunately,
I miscalculated. Unknown to me while he was having affairs with me, he was also
sleeping with my two older daughters.
I didn’t know what was happening until I took my elders
daughter to the hospital following her persistent complains of malaria. I also
haven’t been feeling well; so decided to visit the hospital with my daughter.
When the result came out, we were both pronounced pregnant.
I was shocked because I didn’t expect to be at y age since I have been having
irregular period in the last two years.
At 28, my daughter has never been pregnant. I was happy for
her thinking it was the man I knew her with was responsible. Then, it didn’t
even occur to me that he [my daughter’s fiancé] has been out of Lagos for three
months.
It wasn’t until we
got home that the real problem started. We met my boyfriend at home. While I
was still thinking of how to break my news to him, a text message came to his
phone. After reading the text, he became very agitated so much so he lost
concentration.
I was so concerned. I
forget what I was about to say and snatched the phone from him to know what got
him me very suspicious; I quickly transferred the message to my phone before
handing it over to him. I did the transfer while he was struggling to take the
phone away from me so, he wasn’t aware of what I did.
I almost fainted when
I read the text and discovered it was my daughter telling him that we were both
pregnant for him and he should tell me to abort the baby since she was going to
keep hers.
She told him if he
tried to play smart with her, the whole world would know that he has been
sleeping with her mother, sister and herself.
The worst thing now is that he is nowhere to be found. I
have tried getting him on his phone numbers but none is going through. The
friend I know him with says, he doesn’t know his whereabout and has bluntly
refused to take me to his house.
My second daughter has left home for an unknown destination
following the revelation by her sister that she too has been sleeping with him.
I am very confused as my daughter and I are stuck without
situation. How do I explain to the world that my daughter and I are pregnant
for this same man and that he is nowhere to be seen?
What should I do
please?

23 Days After: Associates, friends hold prayer session over First Lady’s health
Even as the Presidency still kept mum over the issue, there
were reports yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan plans to reunite with
his wife next weekend, and she would accompany him to the United Nations
General Assembly in New York against doctor’s advice.
Reports also had it that doctors at the German hospital,
where Mrs. Jonathan is being treated, have reportedly delayed her treatment by
another week while they await test results from body tissues sent out to other
European specialist hospitals.
There were also speculations that the First Lady may be
moved to another hospital to allow her to recuperate.
According to Presidency source, the decision to relocate
Mrs. Jonathan to another hospital was for security reasons since there had been
a lot of disclosure in the media about Horst Schmidt Klinic in Wiesbaden,
Germany where she was said to have been admitted.
However, speculations were rife over her medical condition,
particularly the ailment that took the First Lady to Germany.
While a version of the news said the first lady was admitted
in the Hospital for food poisoning, others said it was for appendicitis
operation and even tummy tuck.
About two weeks ago, her Special Assistant on Media, Ayo
Osinlu, had insisted that the first Lady was on vacation and also took time to
rest abroad, stressing that the First Lady is in stable health and would soon
return to the country.
He was, however, not certain when Dam Patience would return
to the country from Germany. When asked when the First Lady would return to the
country, Osinlu had said, I don’t know, I don’t have any information on that.”
