30th Convocation: Ibadan Polytechnic graduates 4,977

The Polytechnic, Ibadan on Friday graduated 4,977 students for its 2013/2014 academic session

About 3,675 graduated with National Diploma(ND) while 1,302 graduated with Higher National Diploma(HND).

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, the Visitor to the institution, urged the graduands to learn to be self employed and to tackle challenges of life.

The governor also advised them to be innovative and exceptional in whatever areas of lives they find themselves.

``I stand before you today addressing you simply because I am educated. Without education, I doubt whether I would have that opportunity.

Yuletide: FRSC to deploy more logistics for road safety

The Federal Road Safety Commission, (FRSC) has said that the agency would deploy more logistic support to ensure safety on the nation’s roads during the yuletide.

Corps Commander Stella Uchegbu, Public Education Officer, FRSC said this on Friday during an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

She said the logistic support would be used to complement efforts of the FRSC personnel during the period.

BREAKING NEWS: APC Primaries: Ambode in landslide victory in Lagos as Tambuwal, Umana, Emerhor, others get also ticket



Amid hitches here and there, the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, held governorship primaries across the country to pick its governorship candidates in 31 states where governorship elections will hold next year.

In Lagos, at the end of the elections which was concluded this morning, a former Accountant General of the state, Akinwumi Ambode, a favoured candidate of APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu won convincingly as he polled 3,735 votes out of 5816 vote cast to defeat 11 other aspirants.

Ambode defeated 11 other aspirants including the incumbent Speaker of Lagos House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, a former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan, a former Attorney General of Lagos, Supo  Shasore whom many believed was favoured by Governor Babatunde Fashola, and a former Commissioner for Works, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and others.

PDP suspends ex-Chairman Bamanga Tukur

The National Working Committee of the ruling Peoples Democratic, (PDP) has suspended Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, former National Chairman of the party. 

Also suspended was Aliyu Abuba Gubrin, the party member who challenged the emergence of Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu as the chairman, in succession to Tukur.

A statement issued, Thursday, by Victor Kwon, PDP`s National Legal Adviser, said, “The NWC hereby suspends Dr. Bamanga Tukur and Aliyu Abuba Gubrin for one month and refers them to the National Disciplinary Committee for infringing on section 58(1)(a)( b)( h)( l) of the PDP Constitution 2012( as amended).

“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic, PDP, at its 395th meeting held yesterday, December 3, 2014 reviewed recent national developments as they affect the party.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reiterated that the current economic and security situations in the country are still redeemable.

Obasanjo made this remark yesterday when about seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors yesterday stormed the Abeokuta, Ogun State, hilltop residence of the former president to persuade him to work for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s presidential election.

He said that the country could still be salvaged if those involved had genuine concern for the wellbeing of the citizenry.

According to him, his current posture was not to witch-hunt anyone but to find a lasting solution to the nation's many challenges.

"Something can still be done and what are required now are the will and the courage to do something when and how it needs to be done.

Amosun clinches APC ticket as deputy eyes SDP governorship nod

Incumbent governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Thursday clinched the ticket of the All Progressives Congress to run for the second term in the governorship primary conducted in Abeokuta.

In a related development, his deputy, Mr. Segun Adesegun, also declared his governorship ambition on Thursday on the platform of the Social Democratic Party.

In the primary, which held under tight security, the governor polled 3,861 votes, in a contest where he is the sole aspirant.

The event was supervised by the state and national representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, headed by Kehinde Mustapha.

Twist as appeal committee chair sacks NFF boss, Pinnick

Barely 24 hours after the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Electoral Appeals Committee upheld the 30 September polls that produced the Amaju Pinnick-led executive, the Chairman of the Committee, Okey Ajunwa, has nullified the same elections.

Ajunwa’s ruling which annulled the election of Amaju Pinnick and Seyi Akinwunmi as Chairman and Vice of the NFA board contradicts the ruling of three other members of the committee who upheld the polls on Wednesday.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Mr. Ajunwa said other committee members who “hastily” upheld the September polls are not legal practitioners and were ignorant of the law.

“None of them is a lawyer, I am the lawyer and I know the law, I have gathered the results of the committee and I will read them out in accordance with FIFA and CAF rules,” Mr. Ajunwa told journalist Thursday in Abuja.

Security guard in court for stealing his employer's gun

A security guard, Shola Adeoye, 30, who allegedly stole his employer's gun valued at N270, 000 on Thursday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court in Lagos.

Adeoye is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Innocent Odugbo, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in June, at Iba in Lagos State.

Odugbo said that the accused stole one pump-action gun with registration No. 909326, valued at N270, 000, property of one Alhaji Ibrahim Ibuoye.

Fisherman remanded for allegedly killing colleague over N3,500

An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded a fisherman, Taiye Agbaje, over the alleged murder of his colleague, one Monday Ukoro.

Agbaje, 37, who lives at Ogbun Village, Epe in Lagos State, is facing a charge of unlawful killing.

The Magistrate, Mrs K.A. Ariyo, ordered the remand of the accused at the Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Ariyo, thereafter, adjourned the case till Jan. 27, 2015, pending legal advice from the DPP.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Frank Odigie, had told the court that the offence was committed on Aug. 13, at 3.00 p.m., at Ogbun Village in Epe.

LASUTH health workers join JOHESU strike

Health workers at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, on Thursday said that they would join the ongoing nationwide strike by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU).

The national body of JOHESU had directed all health workers in Lagos State Government-owned hospitals to join the strike from Dec. 4.

The union had on Nov. 12 embarked on an indefinite strike in all the Federal Government-owned hospitals to press home its demands.

Investors lose N1.18 trillion at NSE in November

Investors in the nation's bourse lost N1.18 trillion in November following sell pressure caused by drop in oil price at the global market.

Statistics from the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) for the period under review showed that the market capitalisation dropped by N1.18 trillion to close at N11.404 trillion against N12.579 trillion achieved in October.

The All-Share Index lost 3436.94 basis points or 9.04 per cent to close at 34,543.05 compared with 37,979.99 posted in October due to price depreciation.

A total of 9.08 billion shares worth N100.4 billion were transacted by investors in 93,875 deals against the 7.02 billion shares valued N73.56 billion traded in 85,372 deals in October.

More women detail sex abuse claims against Bill Cosby

Three women on Wednesday came together and detailed allegations that comedian Bill Cosby sexually abused and groped them decades ago.

The fresh allegation came a day after Cosby was sued by a woman who said he molested her when she was a teenager in 1974.

More than a dozen women have publicly accused the comedian of sexual abuse as far back as the 1960s.

The allegations have scuttled Cosby's television projects, and led to cancellations of numerous comedy performances, including two gigs in suburban New York that were scheduled for Saturday.

Imo APC suspends governorship primaries over lack of contestants

The nationwide governorship primaries of the All Progressive Congress (APC) could not hold in Imo State following the inability of the state chapter of the party to produce aspirants for the  election.

Although no specific date has been fixed for the governorship primary, the State Chairman of the party, Hillary Eke disclosed that a new date for the election might be fixed after a general meeting of the party held on Thursday.

But the Vice  Chairman of the party, Hon Ugochukwu Nzekwe insisted that the election may come up on Friday as the party he noted is still working on the list of aspirants.

Police arrest businessman for selling Aswani market for N83m

The Nigerian police have arrested a businessman, Cyprian Nwankwo for allegedly selling four plots of land mapped out by the Lagos State government for the construction of Aswani market to his partner, Monday Chinke for the sum of N83m in Isolo, Lagos state, Western Nigeria.

The Abia-born Nwankwo, who is the managing director, Advance International Merchant Limited allegedly sold the land to his business partner, elder Chinke, who was a shareholder in the company.

After he sold the land and prepared a deed of transfer, it was discovered that the land was earmarked for the construction of Aswani market by the state government.

The police at Zone 2 Onikan arrested Nwankwo after it investigated the ownership of the land and discovered that the land belonged to Lagos state.

Jonathan will sign disability bill into law soon – Abatemi-Usman


The Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman has expressed confidence that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan would soon sign into law the disability bill which has been passed by the two arms of the seventh National Assembly.

Abatemi-Usman gave the assurance in a statement issued in Abuja by his Special Assistant on media and publicity, Michael Jegede, to salute the courage of persons living with disabilities all over the world on the special day (December 3), set aside to celebrate them and seek support for their rights, dignity and welfare.

Lagos/Ibadan expressway reconstruction now 17% complete, says Controller of Works


The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Godwin Eke has disclosed that the completion rate of the current reconstruction work on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway has reached 17 per cent.

Eke said that unforeseen circumstances and impatient driving on the highway by motorists had slowed down the pace of work.

According to him, while work is still going on, the level of completion is about 17 per cent as about 12 kilometres of binder course with special binder material on the Lagos-bound road have been done.

``We have also started work on Ibadan-bound road so that we bring them at par.

Sales rep docked over theft of employer's N10m




A sales representative, Chukwuka Emmanuel, who allegedly stole his employer's N10 million, was on Wednesday charged before a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos.

Emmanuel, 26, who resides at Abule-Ado, Satellite Town in Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Abraham Fadipe, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 14, at Nippon Furniture and Steel Company Ltd, Lagos.

Adeyeye, Lagos assembly leader, loses re-election bid


Leader of the Lagos State House Assembly, Dr. Ajibayo Adeyeye has lost his re-election bid.

Adeyeye lost the Assembly seat to Mr Tunde Braimoh, another aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the re-scheduled primary election in Kosofe Constituency 2.

Announcing the result on Wednesday, the Electoral Officer, Mr Kunle Ogunbela, said that Braimoh polled 230 of the 413 votes cast.

8,000 delegates to storm Lagos for APC presidential primary


The All Progressives Congress (APC) is expecting more than 8,000 delegates in Lagos for its presidential primary election coming up on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11.

The Chairman of the APC National Convention Committee, Mr Olukayode Fayemi, made this known on Wednesday while giving an update to newsmen on the committee's work.

The choice of venue had been an issue of debate as some aspirants wanted the election to hold in Lagos while others preferred Abuja.

Fayemi said: ''We are expecting more than 8,000 delegates all over the country - both elected and statutory delegates.

''As you are already aware, our convention takes place on Dec. 10 and 11.

Leadership tussle rocking Assemblies of God church in Enugu deepens


The leadership tussle rocking the Assemblies of God Church on Wednesday degenerated into a fracas as one of the feuding parties invaded its headquartres in Enugu.

An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said that at about 10 a.m., some unidentified people invaded the headquartres with weapons and burnt a vehicle belonging to a clergyman from one of the branches of the church.

He said that since the present General Superintendent of the church, Rev. Dr Paul Emeka assumed office in 2011, some members of the church had been fomenting trouble.

The eyewitness said the group had planned to attack the church headquarters at Independence Layout, Enugu.

``On getting this information, we quickly informed the security agencies, the state government, and some media houses and placed security men on 24-hour guard at the headquarters since Monday.

Okorocha promises to end insurgency if elected president in 2015


Presidential aspirant on platform of All Progressives Congress, Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo, has promised to stop insurgency in north east if elected president of Nigeria in 2015.

Okorocha made the promise when he paid courtesy visit to the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna on Wednesday.

He added that he would tackle other problems in the area of education and youth unemployment. ``These are responsible for the country’s insecurity

NATCOM Consortium emerges preferred bidder for NITEL, MTEL


NATCOM Consortium on Wednesday in Abuja emerged the preferred bidder for the acquisition of Nigerian Telecommunications Plc (NITEL) and Nigerian Mobile Telecommunication (MTEL).

The reserved bid price was 252.25 million dollars.

Mr Atedo Peterside, the Chairman, Technical Committee of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), disclosed this during public opening of financial bid for acquisition of the two companies.

Peterside said NCP approved privatisation of the two companies in February 2012 through guided liquidation after a review of previous failed attempts.

Enyeama, Musa in Caf Award final five

The Nigerian pair of Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa have made the shortlist of five for the 2014 African Footballer of the Year award.

Caf announced the five-man shortlist, and Enyeama and Musa survived the chop in an initial 25-man list released by the African football governing body in November.

However, the Nigerian duo will have to contend with Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon and the current African Footballer of the Year, Yaya Toure.

Gunmen bomb Ekiti Federal Prisons, free prisoners

Gunmen whose identities still remain unknown have attacked the Federal Prisons, Ado Ekiti on Sunday night and killed one person suspected to be a prison official.

The assailants who were said to be about 60,had stormed the prisons located at Afao Ekiti Road,Ado Ekiti on Sunday night at about 10.30pm

The gang were said to have employed the use of dynamite to bomb the main gate before they can gain entrance into the prisons yard

They equally killed all the 20 sniffer dogs tied in front of the gate.

The gang were said to have came to the prison premises with about seven Hilux trucks, brandishing dangerous weapons such as cudgels, cutlasses, AK 47 rifles , charms and chanting ‘Allahu Akbar’ as they shot sporadically into the air .

Court declares APC staff’s detention ‘unjustifiable’

A federal judge has criticized the State Security Service, SSS, for arresting and detaining five staff of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a raid Saturday, November 22.

Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court, Lagos, on Monday freed the five staff, saying they were detained without justification.

“The arrest and detention of a person for the purpose of obtaining information is clearly a violation of Section 35 of the Constitution,” the judge said. “It is clear that there is a contravention of Section 35 and the applicants were not properly brought before a competent court of jurisdiction.”

Chinedu Atuche, Fayemi Olaposi, Augustine Onuchukwu, Ebun Ilori, and Esther Enemuwe were arrested on November 22 after SSS operatives, accompanied by police officers, raided a building which the APC said was its data office at Allen Avenue, Lagos.

The SSS accused the staff of “unwholesome activities”.

Again, two suicide bombers blow up Maiduguri market, kill 10

Nearly a week after two female suicide bombers attacked the popular Monday market in Maiduguri,  Borno State capital, where several people were killed, another two female suicide bombers on Monday were reported to have unleashed terror attack on the same market.

Not fewer than ten people were feared dead as two explosions ripped through the market, according to witnesses.

It was learnt that the two female bombers who carried the explosives in the back of their hijab dress, arrived a hair braiding salon and blew themselves up as a female civilian-JTF operatives made to search them.


“A middle-aged woman approached the site where chicken sellers attend to customers but vigilantes who stood nearby insisted on checking the luggage she was carrying,” said witness Ahmad Sanusi.

Two women in ‘roforofo’ fight over maid’s baby

A baby girl born by a house maid in Lagos State, western Nigeria, has caused a fight between two women over who among them should take custody of the baby.

The maid lived with a man, Oyekale Oladele and his wife Ngozi, who have been seeking to have a baby for years to no avail.

Trouble started after Mrs Evelyn Njoku reportedly brought the 15-year old mother of the baby to live with Oyekale Oladele and his wife Ngozi, in Lagos and Oladele allegedly impregnated the maid.

Sources said that after she became pregnant, the couple did not allow Mrs. Njoku to see her.

The pregnant maid was allegedly hidden by Ngozi and her husband at FAAN staff quarters at Murtala Mohammed International Airport where both families reside.

When Njoku later discovered that the girl was still in Oladele’s flat, she was already heavily pregnant.
