Jonathan extends emergency rule in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

The National Defence Council (NDC) has approved the extension of the state of emergency in the north-eastern states of Borno, Yore and Adamawa.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, who gave the hint after a meeting of the council presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential Villa, Abuja noted that the president would soon forward a request to the National Assembly for its approval.

“We just reviewed the issue of the state of emergency and the government would be requesting the National Assembly to extend”, Adoke stated.

The emergency rule in the three states have been extended thrice, with the third tranche renewed in May this year expiring yesterday.

The two chambers of the National Assembly granted the president’s request for the third extension on May 20

The Constitution is silent on the number of times the president can extend the six-month emergency rule in a state or any part of the federation.
