The National Defence Council (NDC) has approved the
extension of the state of emergency in the north-eastern states of Borno, Yore
and Adamawa.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of
Justice, Mohammed Adoke, who gave the hint after a meeting of the council
presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential Villa, Abuja
noted that the president would soon forward a request to the National Assembly
for its approval.
“We just reviewed the issue of the state of emergency and
the government would be requesting the National Assembly to extend”, Adoke
stated.
The emergency rule in the three states have been extended
thrice, with the third tranche renewed in May this year expiring yesterday.
The two chambers of the National Assembly granted the
president’s request for the third extension on May 20
The Constitution is silent on the number of times the
president can extend the six-month emergency rule in a state or any part of the
federation.
