The running mate to Nasarawa State PDP gubernatorial
candidate, Mr John Mathew, has urged
security agents to do everything humanly possible to arrest and prosecute
hoodlums that burnt down two PDP buses in Jos.
Mathew, who made the call in an interview, said this would
serve as a deterrent to others who might want to perpetrate such acts.
He said the recent incident in Jos where hoodlums burnt down
vehicles crested with President Goodluck Jonathan's posters was a wake-up call
for security agencies ahead of next month's general elections.
The PDP chieftain expressed regret at the level of ignorance
and intolerance pervading the political system in the country.
He called for concerted efforts on education of voters and
party supporters.
He said that no amount of intimidation or arson would deter
the PDP from returning President Goodluck Jonathan in next month's general
election.
While noting that clashes of interest were a normal
occurrence in politics, he stressed that the Jos incident was a wake up call
for security agencies to ensure proper monitoring of activities of politicians,
political parties and their supporters.
"If anybody believes that the elections would go on
without incidences like this, I would say we are being over optimistic.''
However, I think this is a call for the security forces to
be more alert in monitoring the activities of those who are bent on causing
trouble ahead of this year's elections."
He adduced reasons for the incident to fear by the
opposition party and an attempt to intimidate the PDP through arson and
threats.
"We know that the opposition parties are already afraid
of the defeat that is awaiting them in the February elections .
``They are already jittery that the PDP government under the
leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan has performed so creditably that no
meaningful alternative exists as at today to change the status quo," he
said.
He assured that "the PDP will win next month's election
and no amount of intimidation, arson, threat would stop the electorate from
returning the PDP to government".
"However, these isolated cases would continue to happen
and we pray that they are limited and we also pray that the security agencies
are alive to their responsibilities in curtailing them in their embryonic
stages."
