Lagos records 12,120 rape cases in 4 years, lists 140 convicts in sex offenders register

The Lagos State Government on Monday said that 140 convicted sex offenders had been recorded in a Sex Offenders' Register created by the state government to shame offenders and serve as deterrent.

Mr Ade Ipaye, Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice made the disclosure at the 2015 Ministerial Press Briefing in Ikeja.

He said that the state had recorded no fewer than 12, 120 rape cases and other sexual violence matters in the last four years, describing such acts as threats to dignity and humanity.

According to him, the government is doing its best to address the problem through the law and other means.

Giving other statistics, Ipaye said that it had sentenced 5,834 offenders to community service for various offences in the last four years.

NEMA constitutes committee to investigate alleged rape, child trafficking in IDPs camps

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it has constituted a committee to investigate allegations of attempted rape and child trafficking in some Internally displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the North-East.

A statement signed by Mr Sani Datti, NEMA's Senior Information Officer, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, said that the move was in reaction to an online publication entitled ``Grim Tales of Rape, Child Trafficking in IDP camps’’.

Woman leader blames improper dressing for rising rate of rape

The President of Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWO), Mrs Ngozi Chukwuji, has identified improper dressing among women as the reason for the increase in cases of rape.

Speaking in an interview, she noted that cloths that expose sensitive areas of the female body provoke sexual urge.

Chukwuji urged mothers to monitor their young girls’mode of dressing, even while going to school, as this would discourage sexual provocation.

HIV-positive man rapes lover’s 2 daughters

A 32-year old mason, Terkula Iorpuur, of Behind Hemko Hospital, Kanshio, was on Thursday remanded in prison by a Makurdi Magistrates' Court for allegedly raping two sisters.

Iorpuur is charged with rape punishable under Section 284 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor, Insp Terzungwe Kajo, told the court that the uncle of the victims reported the matter at 'B' Division Police Station, Makurdi, on Oct. 6.

Kajo said the victims’ mother complained that the two children, aged eight and six years respectively, were not walking properly.

``They took the girls to the hospital for treatment and the doctor discovered that someone forcefully had sex with them.

``When questioned, the victims revealed that the accused, who was their mother's lover, had sex with them.’’

Kajo stated that the medical examination further revealed that the accused was HIV positive and had been on drugs.

However, for lack of jurisdiction, no plea was taken when the case came up for mention.

The prosecutor said investigation into the matter was ongoing and asked the court for another date for mention.

The Magistrate, Mrs Lillian Tsumba, adjourned the matter till Dec. 4 for further mention.

A 42-year-old pastor of a white garment church, Alasco Shobowale who allegedly raped a 12-year-old foster daughter of his neighbour (name withheld) was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos.

Shobowale, who speaks Igbo, the only language the girl understands, had allegedly lured the girl to the toilet of their residence and raped her.
