More members of the House of Representatives and the Senate
have thrown their weight behind the call for the impeachment of President
Goodluck Jonathan for the shoddy manner he has been handling the affairs of
state.
President Jonathan has been accused lately of ruling with
impunity and trying to undermine the constitution.
P.M.NEWS gathered this morning that more than 195
representatives and 70 senators have so far signed an impeachment motion
against the president.
The Senate has 109 members while there are 360 members of
the House of Representatives.
Those pushing for the impeachment of the president require
the support of two-third of members in both the Senate and the House of
Represntatives to achieve their aim.
Some of the members of the House of Representatives who
spoke on the issue said President Jonathan’s impeachment was long overdue and
that they were ready to do it in order to sanitise the democratic process and
give the country a new lease of life.
They accused the president of desecrating the sanctity of
the National Assembly by drafting policemen to the premises to prevent the
Speaker of the House of Representatives from entering the House.
They also accused the president of being weak in his crusade
against corruption and handling of Boko Haram insurgents who have taken over
some towns in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
Meanwhile, the deputy Chairman House of Representatives
Comittee on Finance, Otunba Yomi Ogunnusi has called on the Inspector-General
of Police, Suleiman Abba, to apologise to the Speaker of the House, Aminu
Tambuwal or else the House will not approve funds for police welfare.
Ogunnusi wondered why the IGP should declare that he would
not recognise Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House, adding that the IGP would
be charged with contempt of court for disobeying court order that Tambuwal
remains the Speaker of the House.
The lawmaker representing Ifako Ijaiye Federal Constituency
condemned the action of the police boss, saying he has no right to derobe the
Speaker.
