6,050 candidates slug it out in today's election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says 6,050 candidates will be contesting the governorship and State House of Assembly elections across the country on today Saturday April 11.

This is contained in the commission’s daily bulletin issued in Abuja on Friday.

According to the bulletin, of this number, 760 candidates are vying for governorship positions while 5,290 are contesting for positions in the state Houses of Assembly.

1, 537 candidates contest elections for 469 NASS seats

No fewer than 1,537 candidates from 28 political parties are expected to contest elections for the 469 seats in the National Assembly in Saturday’s national elections, available information shows. 


Details released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that 747 are contesting elections for the 109 seats in the Senate and 1,790 are contesting for the 360 seats in the House of Representatives. 



Among the Senate election candidates are 126 women and 621 men, while 254 women are among those contesting to be members of the House of Representatives. .

A breakdown of the list shows that no female candidate is contesting election into the Senate in  Edo, Gombe, Jigawa, kastina, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Ondo and Yobe states.

16 parties, 4 presidential candidates threaten boycott if general elections not postponed


Sixteen parties and four presidential candidates have called for the postponement of the general elections.

This was made known on their behalf by the presidential candidate of the United Democratic Party, UDP, Godson Okoye, on Tuesday at a news conference in Abuja.

1.4 million candidates to write 2015 JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that no fewer than 1.4 million candidates nationwide would write the 2015 All Computer Base Test (CBT) on March 4.

Mr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB Public Relations Officer, said that the board would be migrating all to computer-based mode of examination for the first time.

The Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, had in the last few years, sensitised secondary schools students on the computer-based mode of test effective from 2015.
