INEC fixes April 25 for re-run election in Imo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has fixed April 25 for re-run of the 2015 Governorship and some constituencies in the state House of Assembly elections in Imo.

Dr Gabriel Ada, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo State, announced this at a news conference in Owerri on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that INEC had declared the April 11 governorship polls in Imo inconclusive.

This followed the cancellation of elections in more than 250 polling units in 23 of the 27 local government areas.

While there are apprehension and confusion among Nigerians as they anxiously await the official result of Taraba state governorship poll from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, they might have to wait a bit longer as the state returning officer for governorship election Prof. Muhamdu Kyari has declared the governorship election in Taraba as inconclusive.

The returning officer made the declaration in Jalingo Taraba state capital after collating the result from sixteen out of the seventeen local government areas in Taraba state.

He said the reason for the declaration was because the number of canceled votes was above the gap between APC who came second in the election to PDP who came first.

Agbaje urges Lagosians to ignore online results, insists he has not lost

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has urged his supporters to disregard the figures being circulated online.


Agbaje said on his Facebook page that he was still hopeful of victory, adding that they should wait for the official figures from the Independent National Electoral Commission.


He said, “I want to assure you that we are currently monitoring the vote counting process so please do not believe the various unofficial numbers that are being shared across the Internet .


“An official announcement will be made at the appropriate time when all numbers are in. Continue to remain resolute. Thank you for your continued support. “


Though INEC is yet to announce the final results of the Lagos state gubernatorial election, results have continued to awash social networks indicating that the All Progressive Congress candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode is in clear lead in most of the local governments.

6,050 candidates slug it out in today's election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says 6,050 candidates will be contesting the governorship and State House of Assembly elections across the country on today Saturday April 11.

This is contained in the commission’s daily bulletin issued in Abuja on Friday.

According to the bulletin, of this number, 760 candidates are vying for governorship positions while 5,290 are contesting for positions in the state Houses of Assembly.

FLASH: INEC postpones elections in 11 Federal Constituencies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of election in seven out of eleven federal constituencies in Jigawa state.


The resident electoral commissioner in charge of state, Alhaji Halliru Aliyu Tambawel announced the development while briefing news men yesterday night at INEC headquarter in Dutse, said the postponement was due to the short-fall of Sensitive materials including ballot papers and results sheets from the central Bank of Nigeria.


He listed the affected seven federal constituencies as Dutse/Kiyawa, Ringim/ Taura, HadeJia/Kafin Hausa/Auyo, and Jahun Miga federal Constituencies of Jigawa state, others include Gumel/Maigatari/Sule tankarkar/ Gagarawa, Kaugama/Malam-madori and Gwaram Federal constituencies.


Tambuwal explained that the remaining four federal constituencies in the state election will hold today and they include Babura/Garki, Birnin Kudu/Buji, Birniwa/ Guri/Kirikasamma and Kazaure/Roni/Gwiwa/’Yankwashi federal constituencies in the state.


The resident electoral commissioner further explained that, the Presidential election and senatorial elections will hold as scheduled in all the 27 local government areas in the state as the commission received both sensitive and non sensitive material for the election and ready for election.

Card Readers: Presidency mounts pressure on court to stop INEC

Strong indications emerged yesterday that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) is banking on the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) and its chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, from going ahead with the use of Smart Card Readers(SCRs) for the March 28 and April 11 elections.

The resolve of the party and the presidency is that a favourable judgment must be secured at all cost, if the INEC must be stopped from using the novel device for the polls.

There are two cases before the Federal High Court in Abuja and Lagos. Sources said the presidency would not mind instituting a fresh case in another court just to have its way.

Name substitution: Court orders APC, INEC to recognise Eshilokun

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday declared Mr Wasiu Eshilokun as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Lagos Island Constituency 1 for the April 11 election into the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Eshilokun, a former Secretary of the APC in Lagos State, had challenged the substitution of his name with that of one Hakeem Masha who, he said, lost to him in the primary election.

According to him, he polled 186 votes to beat seven other candidates in the primary election conducted by the APC to select a candidate for Lagos Island Constituency 1.

INEC to engage 34,000 ex-corp members for polls

About 34,000 members of the National Youth Service Corps who recently passed out would be deployed to participate in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has said.

He also stated that the NYSC had put in place a watertight strategy to guarantee the safety of corps members taking part in the elections.

Olawumi spoke on Friday in Abuja during a news conference ahead of President’s NYSC Honours Award ceremony scheduled for Monday, March 2 which has been approved by President Goodluck Jonathan.

78.93% PVCs collected so far – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has put the percentage of Permanent Voter Cards collected at 78.93 per cent. This was contained in the report released by the commission in Abuja on Friday.

The figure was based on the report got by the commission from the field as of Friday.

While it put the number of registered voters at 68,833,476, it added that it had also delivered 67,206, 600 PVCs across the country.

Elections: INEC set for public enlightenment on smart card readers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday said that it would next week begin public enlightenment on the use of smart card readers.

An INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Akinola Salau, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Salua, who is in charge of Osun, Ondo and Lagos states, spoke to NAN during a visit to Lagos State Office of INEC, in preparation for the general elections.

INEC advises politicians not to buy PVCs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised politicians to invest their time and resources in positive strategies of winning elections rather than buying Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from prospective voters.

Mr Nick Dazang, the Deputy Director, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, following a claim that politicians were buying cards and collecting their numbers.

NLC expresses disappointment with INEC over postponement of general elections

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has expressed disappointment with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the for shifting the date of the general elections.

INEC chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega had on Feb. 7 announced the postponement of the date of the presidential and NASS elections from Feb. 14 to March 28.

The date for the governorship and state Assembly elections were shifted from Feb. 28 to April 11.

INEC assures Nigerians of credible elections

The Independents National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the 2015 general elections would be credible.

The INEC Commissioner in charge of South- South zone, Mrs Thelma Iremiren, gave the assurance at a voter education seminar in Port Harcourt.

The seminar, which had ``Are Nigerians Ready for the 2015 Election’’ as its theme, was organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt branch, in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission and INEC, among others.

INEC to meet parties leaders on elections schedules

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a consultative meeting with leadership of the political parties for Saturday, Feb. 7, on the conduct of the 2015 general election.

Nigeria may delay its Feb. 14 presidential elections if the number of permanent voters cards, PVC the electoral commission (INEC) can distribute by Feb. 8 is too low, an electoral commissioner told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Let's see how the PVC (permanent voter card) distribution goes by Feb 8, then maybe," Amina Zachary, a commissioner for the Independent Nigerian Electoral Committee said on the sidelines of a news conference, when asked whether or not the date could be changed.

INEC receives additional 4.1m PVCs

Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has disclosed that the commission had taken delivery of additional 4.1 million Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for distribution to registered voters.

Jega disclosed this while responding to questions at the launch of ``Mitigation of Violence in Election’’ organised by the International Foundation for Election System (IFES) in Abuja.

Iwuanyawu urges INEC to postpone February elections

The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT ), Labour Party, Mr Dan Iwuanyawu, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone forthcoming general elections to enable eligible voters to collect Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Iwuanyawu, who made the call while exchanging views with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the postponement was necessary in view of the fact that only 38 million voters, out of 68 million registered by INEC, had collected the PVC.

INEC confirms ownership of ballot boxes intercepted in Ogun

The Ogun Police Command says INEC has confirmed its ownership of the ballot boxes that were intercepted by soldiers on the Benin-Sagamu Expressway.

The spokesperson of the command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, told newsmen on Tuesday in Abeokuta that soldiers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Abeokuta, on Tuesday intercepted a truck containing 3,600 ballot boxes.
