A Magistrates’ Court in Kano, on Tuesday remanded in prison
custody a 29-year-old commercial sex worker, Chioma Okoro, for allegedly
pouring hot water on her colleague over a customer.
Okoro, who resides at Ijebu Road, Sabon Gari Kano, is facing
a three-count charge of inciting disturbance, causing grievous bodily hurt and
criminal intimidation.
The Magistrate, Mrs Aisha Yahaya ordered the accused to be
remanded in prison custody until when the court was satisfied that the
complainant was responding to treatment.
She adjourned the case till May 11, for further mention
Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Ekainu Elias, told the court
that Chioma Ohanaka, also of Ijebu Road, Sabon Gari, Kano, had on April 18
reported the assault on her at the Sabon Gari Police Division, Kano.
The prosecutor said that Ohanaka alleged that the accused
assaulted her following a quarrel over a male customer.
Elias said that the complainant had retired to her room
after a heated argument with Okoro, but the accused burst in and poured hot
water on her.
The prosecutor said that Ohanaka consequently sustained
severe injuries on the face and chest as a result of the hot water poured on
her.
He said that the complainant was still in the hospital
receiving treatment.
Elias told the court that Okoro also threatened to kill
herself and Ohanaka after the incident.
The prosecutor said that the offences committed contravened
Sections 243 and 396 of the penal code.
When the charges were read out to the accused, she pleaded
not guilty to the first and third counts, and guilty to the second count.
